Precision Machine Tools Need Condition Visibility: RB Remote I/O Brings Temperature, Vibration and Position into the PLC

Precision Machine Tools Need Condition Visibility: RB Remote I/O Brings Temperature, Vibration and Position into the PLC

2024-02-12

For precision machine tools, it is not enough to simply execute motion—data such as spindle temperature, feed vibration and axis loads are crucial for machining quality and machine life. Traditional I/O setups with only a few limit switches and buttons cannot support advanced condition monitoring or predictive maintenance.

In one project, the builder adopted a Siemens S7-1200 PLC with RB remote I/O, using three RB-1110 units plus multiple 16DI/16DO and AI modules to collect position, temperature, vibration and feed-related signals.

  • Digital I/O handles axis home and limit switches, door locks and alarms;

  • Analog inputs connect to temperature, vibration and pressure sensors, providing continuous data on machine “health”.

With RB remote I/O, the machine tool builder can:

  • Greatly expand monitoring points without consuming additional PLC slots;

  • Prepare a solid data foundation for future SCADA or cloud connectivity;

  • Use long-term data analysis to develop value-added services such as spindle health prediction and lubrication optimization.

The RB series helps turn this precision machine tool from a simple motion executor into an intelligent asset that reports its own condition.
